Officials urge safe driving in work zones

According to recent records from the North Carolina Department of Transportation, around 13 people were killed and over 1,700 people sustained injuries during construction work zone accidents in the state in 2013, The News Herald reported on September 19.

Officials from the department urged the public and motorists to take extra care and slow down whenever they approach construction work zones, as most accidents are caused by driver speeding and inattention. The officials also reminded construction zone workers to remain alert and adhere to workplace safety standards instituted by the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Workplace accidents sometimes happen even when everyone in the workplace is practicing safe behaviors. When this is the case, a workers’ compensation benefit package can be used to compensate the accident victim as he or she recovers.
