Business Owner Didn’t Provide Workers’ Comp.
A Putnam man has been charged with failing to provide workers compensation coverage for his employees. Russell Avery, 67, was charged with four counts of failure to carry workers compensation insurance. Failure to provide workers comp is a felony that state authorities said is punishable by up to five years in prison for each count.
The arrest warrant affidavit states that Avery failed to provide insurance between January 2004 and September 2008. As a result the state was forced to pay lost wages and medical benefits to injured employees.
Civil penalties were leveled against Avery and his business by the Workers Compensation Commission. The case will be prosecuted by the Workers Compensation Fraud Control Bureau of the Chief State’s Attorney’s office.
